THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU

Author: Rosie Alison
Summary:
As Europe is inexorably drawn into the greatest conflict of its history,
its impact falls particularly heavily on the lives of families and children.
Roberta Sands is a young mother in London separated from her soldier husband
by thousands of miles and forced to send her only child away to avoid German bombs.
She is torn between her love for her absent family and her excitement at her new life
as a secretary at the wartime BBC. Anna Sands is her small daughter torn away from
her mother and made to live miles away on Ashton estate in Yorkshire in a barracks with
forty other children. We see this strange new world poignantly through her mournful eyes.
Lastly there is Elizabeth and Thomas Ashton the owners of the country house who
have every possible material benefit in the world apart from the only thing that
could bring them joy; a child. Can looking after everyone else's children possibly
bring them relief and can their new situation save their dying marriage? Shortlisted
for this year's Orange Prize, the Very Thought of You is an engrossing and heartrending
exploration of lives torn apart by war and by love and is a highly recommmended read.

The story is charming. It is sad, it is happy. It is really well written. This appears to be the first novel of a new author. I enjoyed this book very much and will be looking out for future releases.

I finished this book recently after randomly choosing it from the best seller's rack and I loved it! So beautifully written it made my heart swell so much, I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to pass it on to my Mum at the weekend! :) Highly recommend.

This was every bit as good as the reviews promised.

I read it over six nights and was captivated. The author really understands how a child's mind works so the story was told from her viewpoint as well as from the position of the adults.Very atmospheric as it weaved fact (the inclusion of real-life relatives of the author) and fiction. I shall definitely be looking out for any susequent books.

Its been a very long time since I've read a book that I have been truly enthralled and touched by. It was beautifullly written and touched certain emotions within me that left me moved for several days. This is by far one of my favourite books and a little secret of mine now.Very devastating to have finished it.
