We are in the middle of the greatest economic upheavel that this country has ever seen and our great and good leaders do not seem to have a problem with expenses that one would expect from a middle eastern Shiek. What world do these people live in it is certianly not in a world of job losses negative equity and crippling personal debt. This great little Republic of ours now looks like some bananna republic where the privelaged live well while the majority suffer. How can we accept this is this what people fought and died for to form the Irish Republic. Surely we as a nation are better than this or not????

While I agree with you in the main, it is a fact that as a country we also seem a bit too obsessed with what the other fella has, or even how can I make sure he loses a bit of what he had. The sad fact is that our overpaid politicians will not stand up and justify what they are doing on a regular basis. An election every four years is when we get the opportunity to change what is happening, and the silence from the so called opposition is deafening when they should be using issues such as this to press home their case for change. bottom line is there won't be any difference if we do change the government, but who in their right mind would want to be in government right now.

I do accept that we demand a lot of public reps who are very well paid, and I do not have a problem with the state providing aire transport where required. Recent relevations about JOD are understandable when he was in Cannes promoting the film output of the country, and naturally he wanted to be back in the constituency for the announcements at FEXCO. Gods they might think they are, but bi-location od not a talent they have developed yet.

In short our expectations are that national politicians will spend all theirt time on national issues, and then the local constituency will be so grateful they will send them back for a second term. Not quite how it works. As that O'Donovan fellow from Cork who was a very effective chairman of the public accounts committee in what I think was his first term in the dail..... very busy.... very good press profile....but abandoned the local issues. Was not re-elected.

We are in dire need of leadership as a country.I for one feel this is another example of the attitude "do as I say not as I do"attitude that prevails with our country`s leaders. That is why I believe that we have a right as voters to question what these people do in our names. What even worries me more is the complete silience from the oppisition on this matter as well.Is this a example of the political class closing ranks to protect one of its "Sacred cows".
