Christmas Shopping across the Border

With Christmas fast approaching people are more and more looking for cost effective ways when doing their shopping. Recently there has been a huge influx of people over the border going to places like Newry for food and present shopping and with differences up to 30% in cost can you really blame them? Should we be supporting local businesses during these economically difficult times or are they right to look for the cheaper options?

hi there.
Generally would not do this but right now I reckon the only people who can afford to shop in the 26 counties for all their christmas shopping are civil servants.

The proble is we give tem far too much time off, and this just facilitates their travelling to NI to shop. Think about it.....

Teachers work about 34 weeks a year (30 if you are a sec teacher) and during that time they work from 8:45 to 14:30. They are paid for a full day and for months of holidays. So in fact they work part time for full time money. Good work if you can get it.

Office based departmental civil servants get a days leave which does not come out of their generous annual leave entitlement or their 10 uncertified sick days allowance, to go shopping.

Some (and I stress some) nurse who work 7 day shift of nights get THREE weeks off after a week of nights. They get this while still paid a shift allowance and all the time off as well.

Now if Jack O'Connor has his way, we will postpone fiscal rectitude, (because some fairy godmother is going to continue to lend us the 500 odd million per month we like to spend while we dont collect it) and leave all the civil servants in their nice offices with heat and light. The already underworked poor souls will have even less to do when we cut services not people (good man Jack) and he is seriously suggesting that we leave them all there collecting their wage sand running up a pension bill on lunatic proportions.

The same Jack was on the TV recently telling us that this government walked us into this terrible mess. I seem to recall the same Jack and his friends David and Peter etc all trundling into Govt buildings to talk partnership. Benchmarking is not just the legacy of Berties Aherne, god forgive him, but also his social partnership fabric which included the very well paid union leaders weith their "trophy jobs" to coin a similar phrase as that so close to Jack's beating little heart.

Any if anyone is in any doubt as to the aims of Jack then please refer to any of the published articles reporting the speech he gave when invited to the recent relaunch of the communist party. Sure we are all equal, just some with trophy jobs and state board memberships are mnore equal than others.

Share the pain.... I do listening to the tripe that is tritted out on a regular basis.

The civil service is 3000 less than it was 12 months ago..... the dole queuq is 140,000 longer. Go figure it out.

Meantime I am going to go shopping in the North this year... just to imagine what it might be like to have a state sponsored job where you cannot be fired and look forward to large lump sums and pensions that are guaranteed and index linked....and then I woke UP!!!

Cheers,
